SALMA FRANCOISE FARAJI

I Hear You is 25-minute performance created by Salma and incorporates choreography with integrated BSL, spoken word and live music, in collaboration with cellist, Peter Nicholson. The work is based on three proses Salma wrote shortly after the tragic death of George Floyd during lockdown. In seeking to find her voice, she turned to the rich vocabulary of BSL to support the narrative of dance. She has choreographed a unique dance language using BSL to explore non-verbal communication, similarities within diverse cultural contexts, and challenge silence through the portals of connection, empathy, and shared vulnerability.

Salma is a dance teacher, lecturer and artist. Originally from Tanzania, Salma has performed, taught and shared joy alongside inspiring choreographers and communities worldwide.

“I continue to find narrative in my practice, inspired by shared experiences.  The Creator’s Fund, enables me to continue studying BSL Level 3, gain valuable mentorship and further explore languages within culture, as I pursue collaborating with Artists, dramaturgs, directors and producers.

My wider practice is a response to my personal development: Am I too Old, too different, too vulnerable, too honest?”
